Scope

Stone sourcing through to finishing

The brief

A clear deadline.
A connected manufacturing process.

This project brought stone sourcing and ring manufacture into one brief. The centre stone was sourced from an external supplier, followed by the digital model and the manufacturing stages needed to turn that design into a finished piece.

Two days was the outcome for this individual project. Timing for a new project is confirmed after reviewing the design, material availability and workshop schedule.

From the workbench

Five filmed stages.
One finished ring.

The film follows CAD, filing, stone setting and polishing, then shows the completed solitaire. The stills below come from this same project footage.

Stone sourcing and casting formed part of the project, but are not shown directly in the footage.

Silent process film with stage captions. A written account of each stage follows below.

The making of the ring

From sourcing to the finished piece.

  1. 01

    Sourcing the centre stone

La Roche sourced the centre stone from an external supplier for this project. Its pear-shaped outline is the focal point of the finished ring.

  2. 02

    Developing the CAD model

The opening footage shows the ring model on the design screen, including the band, centre setting and supporting prongs. The digital model defines the form taken forward into manufacture.

    Casting the mount

Casting followed the design stage to create the metal mount. The casting operation itself is not filmed; the resulting mount appears in the subsequent bench-work footage.

  4. 04

    Filing and refining

The jeweller works by hand around the band and centre setting. Different angles show filing and surface refinement around the prongs before the centre stone is fitted.

    Setting the stones

Magnified footage records stone-setting work and the fitting of the centre stone. Further close-ups show the jeweller refining the prong area as the setting takes its finished form.

    Polishing the ring

With the stones in place, the ring is worked against a polishing wheel. This is the final finishing stage shown before the completed-piece reveal.
